Frank C McAlister passed away peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 5, at the age of 94.
Frank was born to Augustus C. McAlister and Gladys (Moore) McAlister in Greenville, SC on December 27, 1922 he grew up in Chili, IN where he graduated High School. He was editor of the school paper, senior class president, and active in many sports. After high school, Frank worked at Bryan Manufacturing Co. in Peru Indiana entering as a shipping clerk, and soon worked his way up Personnel Manager of this 1100 employee multi location firm. On July 16, 1944, he married the love of his life Mary Jane Grismore and they were married 63 years until she died in 2007. As truly devoted husband, he wore his wedding ring even after her death as a testament to his love for her. Also in 1944 Frank served his country faithfully in the US Army in France, Germany and Belgium during WWII. He entered as a private he came back stateside in 1946 with the rank of Battalion Sergeant Major. Using benefits from the G I Bill Frank enrolled in the IU school of Business and received his MBA degree in 1951and was a Beta Gamma Sigma scholastic honoree. From 1951-1955, Frank worked at the Spencer Chemical Co. in Kansas and Mississippi as Personnel Manager. He then moved back to Indiana late 1955 and went to work for The Indiana State Chamber of Commerce, first as a 5-year Director of Transportation, and then as Director of Personnel and Labor Relations. He held this until his retirement. During that time Frank was honored with 3 Sagamore of the Wabash Awards under Governors Orr, Bowen, and Bayh. He also received special recognition plaques from the Department of Health and Human Services for his work on child support legislation and was honored by the Indiana Optometric Association receiving the Outstanding Service in the Public Interest Award in 1989. His name was included in the Midwest edition of Who's Who. In addition to work, Frank was very active in many rolls at the East 38th Christian Church, the Eastside Family YMCA, the American Legion, Indiana Press Club, Indiana University Varsity Club, School of Business Alumni Association and the Indiana Historical Society. His hobbies included gardening, photography, telling jokes and most of all being a loyal fan of his IU Hoosiers. As a loyal counselor and adviser for family and friends Frank's advice was always sound, reasoned and optimistic. He encouraged you to see the possibilities of your potential and to do "common jobs uncommonly well". He was true patriot he believed it the goodness of this country and the duty of each person he dealt with. He encouraged people to "do the right thing." It is easily said that Frank left the world a better place than he found it. His loss will be felt by many.

Survivors include his very grateful son and daughter Mark and Susan McAlister along with his grandchildren Daniel, Leith and Brand McAlister, James Roberts, and great-grandchildren, Jax and Lake McAlister; Matthew and Alexandria Roberts.
Funeral services for Frank will be held on Friday, December 8, at 1:00 pm at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Greenwood Chapel. A visitation will be held from 11:00 am until the time of service. Military honors will be rendered at the funeral home immediately following the funeral. Entombment will be private.
