Helen L. Hughes Martin, 83, passed away Monday, February 13, 2017 at home in Fort Wayne. Born in Orland, IN, on February 25, 1933 to William and Frankie (Caskey) Hughes. and was the eldest of three daughters. She graduated from South Side High School in 1951 and married Myron L "Mike" Martin on July 13, 1952 and enjoyed 64 years of marriage. She was a nurturing homemaker and loved caring for her children and grandchildren. Family was her life. Helen was a geneologist, researching her family tree and those of others for over 40 years, including writing books about the subject. She also loved her garden, growing vegetables and flowers, listening to and feeding the birds, especially the humming birds and butterflies, and feeding the squirrels. She was a member of the Avalon Missionary Church where she was active, and organized the "Young at Heart" ministry for nearly 20 years. Surviving, in addition to her husband Myron, are her children; Linda S. Martin of Fort Wayne, Cynthia L. (Donald) Grodrian of Monroeville and David M. (Deborah) Martin of Fort Wayne; granddaughters, Melissa Martin of Fort Wayne, Emily Martin of Muncie and Natalie Martin of Fort Wayne; step-grandchildren Steve (Maria) Grodrian of Monroeville, Donna Lepper of Fort Wayne and Kurtis Grodrian of Huntington: 4 step- great grandchildren and 2 step-great great grandchildren: sister, Betty (Bill) McKinney of Fort Wayne, IN; brother in law Gaylord Miller of Columbia City as well as many nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents and sister Shirley Miller. Funeral Service is 2:00 pm, Friday, February 17, 2017 at D.O. McComb & Sons Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 Fairfield Avenue with calling one hour prior. Calling will also be Thursday, February 16, 2017, from 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial in Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Memorials may be made to the Avalon Missionary Church Benevolent Fund, Cancer Services of N E Indiana or Parkview Hospice.
